Documenting the Missed Opportunity Period for Influenza Vaccination in Office-based Settings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Missed opportunities for influenza vaccination in office-based settings occur when patients (who are inclined to accept influenza vaccination if a provider recommends it) remain unvaccinated after a fall/winter healthcare visit. Healthcare providers can be very influential in encouraging patients to obtain influenza vaccination, but little is known in real-time during annual campaigns of how many and what type of providers are actually giving vaccinations in office settings. Many factors affect the ultimate population coverage including taking advantage of opportunities to vaccinate during medical visits. This suggests that provider vaccination behavior, if leveraged, could result in higher rates of influenza vaccine coverage. “Big” healthcare data in the form of high volume streams of electronic healthcare reimbursement claims (eHRCs) can potentially be used to track influenza vaccine administration practices in office-based settings in near real-time, thus empowering public health officials to provide this feedback to practitioners and potentially modify behaviors.

OBJECTIVE During the 2000 to 2001 influenza season, distribution of influenza vaccine was delayed, and national self-reported vaccination rates declined. The purposes of this study were to characterize missed opportunities for adult vaccinations and assess the impact of the vaccine delay on missed opportunities for influenza vaccination as recorded in medical records. METHODS In a cross-secti...

OBJECTIVES Despite long-standing recommendations to provide annual influenza vaccination to children with chronic medical conditions, immunization rates are <10% in most primary care settings. Many obstacles impede implementation of these recommendations, including the challenge of identifying targeted children and the need to immunize yearly in a short time interval. The objective of this stud...

متن کاملFactors associated with in-office influenza vaccination by U.S. pediatric providers
BACKGROUND In the United States, influenza vaccination is recommended for all children 6 months and older; however, vaccination rates are below target levels. A broad sample of U.S. pediatric offices was assessed to determine factors that influence in-office influenza vaccination rates. METHODS Offices (N = 174) were recruited to participate in an observational study over three influenza seas...
